Before work starts, identify the approved drawings, specification, responsible reviewer and hold points. At each stage, record what was checked before the next activity conceals it. A photograph or tick box does not approve structural work.
Project-control information
- Site address, plot reference and applicable authority or society.
- Current architectural, structural and services drawing registers.
- Written scope, contract, programme and change procedure.
- Named roles for design, supervision, contractor decisions and owner approvals.
- Required material submittals, tests and inspection hold points.
Stage-by-stage record prompts
| Stage | Record prompts |
|---|---|
| Setting out and excavation | Benchmarks, grid, boundaries, founding level, soil observations, dewatering and approved response to unexpected conditions. |
| Foundations | Dimensions, blinding, reinforcement marks, cover arrangements, embedded items, inspection and concrete record. |
| Columns and beams | Member size, formwork condition, reinforcement schedule, joints, inserts, openings and pre-pour approval. |
| Slabs and stairs | Levels, thickness, openings, services coordination, reinforcement, supports, pour sequence and curing plan. |
| Masonry | Wall layout, thickness, unit acceptance, mortar approach, openings, lintels, ties, chases and alignment checks. |
| Water-retaining or exposed areas | Specified system, substrate preparation, sequence, protection and required testing. |
| Handover of grey structure | Drawing changes, test records, quantity reconciliation, defects, unresolved items and photographic index. |
Material delivery log
Record supplier, product, stated specification, quantity, date, delivery document, visible condition, storage location and acceptance decision. PSQCA maintains Pakistan standards for civil materials; the project documents should identify which standards and editions apply.
Photographs that can be found later
Name files with date, level, grid or room and activity. Include an overview and a closer view with scale where useful. Store them beside the related inspection or delivery record. Avoid relying on messaging-app history as the only archive.
Change control
When a drawing, dimension or material changes, record the request, technical response, cost/time effect and approval before implementation where practicable. Update the relevant take-off rather than adding an unexplained lump sum at the end.
Safety and professional responsibility
The Building Code of Pakistan establishes safety and administration context, while local adoption and the authority having jurisdiction determine enforcement. Use qualified professionals for structural design, site decisions and required inspections.
Questions people ask
Is this an engineering inspection checklist?
No. It is a record-keeping prompt for owners and project teams. Acceptance criteria and approvals must come from qualified professionals, project documents and the authority having jurisdiction.
Why photograph work before concrete or plaster?
Concealed work becomes difficult to verify later. Dated, labelled photographs support records but do not replace inspection, testing or approval.
Who should sign site checks?
Use the roles and approvals defined in the contract and applicable regulations. Do not assign professional responsibility to an unqualified person through a generic checklist.
